Environmental
The protection of the Earth is not just an aspirational goal, but the practical application and efficient use of our resources and expertise. We use our proprietary technology and services to deliver efficiencies that reduce our customers’ operational footprint.
Environmental Management Systems
At Nabors, environmental management is woven into our integrated management system and housed within our Health, Safety, and Environmental Integrated Management System (HSE-MS). Our system components are interrelated, enabling us to address health, safety, and environmental risks while simultaneously protecting our employees, the environment, and local communities. Our management system considers applicable environmental laws, regulations, and industry standards. This proactive approach is our way of effectively managing risks and seizing opportunities.
We aim for sustainability in all operations, including our supply chain and contractors. As a result, our HSE IMS applies to third-party vendors working in any capacity for our organization. (ISO 14001:2015). To learn more about Nabors environmental stewardship, please review our 2023 ESG Sustainability Report.
Increased Drilling Footage, Reduced Emissions Per Foot
Despite the increase in drilling footage, Nabors International has achieved a decline in Scope 1 GHG emissions per foot drilled compared to our 2020 baseline, surpassing our target of 5% established last year. Similarly, Nabors Drilling USA has seen a reduction in Scope 1 GHG emissions per foot drilled, exceeding our target of 3% from 2020. Concurrently, we are actively aiding our customers in lowering their emissions, giving them a competitive edge within the industry. Moreover, through offerings like our RigCLOUD® platform, we furnish equipment and analytical services to assist customers in managing and mitigating their emissions, thereby fostering sustainability throughout our sector.
Environmental Stewardship
We are committed to Environmental Stewardship and pioneering technologies designed to address and diminish the environmental impact of our operations and those of our valued customers.
Focusing on efficient fuel use and engine power to reduce GHG emissions globally has proven successful across our operations. With the strategies we implemented in 2023, we simultaneously increased drilling footage and reduced GHG emissions per foot, allowing us to exceed several of our GHG emissions reduction goals for the year.
Through our commitment to environmental stewardship, we acknowledge the vital importance of responsible water management and conservation. In our proactive approach to water management, we adopted water conservation best practices emphasizing wastewater recycling and reuse whenever safe and viable. We are constantly assessing risks linked to discharging into bodies of water and placing spill-prevention measures across all our operational rigs and any applicable facilities, ensuring the safety and security of our water resources.
Decarbonization Portfolio
At Nabors, we are committed to pioneering technologies designed to address and diminish the environmental impact of our operations and those of our valued customers. We are committed to collaborating closely with our customers while on operational sites to optimize water utilization.
Our decarbonization portfolio includes various products and investments to reduce carbon emissions and transition to a more sustainable, low-carbon economy.
Energy Transition Solutions
Nabors Energy Transition Solutions (NETS) is at the forefront of the global energy sector’s shift towards lower carbon and renewable sources to maximize our impact on energy transition for the benefit of customers, shareholders, and the future of our planet.
We are dedicated to reducing our exposure to climate change-related risks through a comprehensive dual approach. Firstly, we are actively mitigating downside risks by reducing the carbon intensity of our drilling operations. Secondly, we are proactively supporting society’s increasing demand for energy from alternative sources.
These investments leverage our extensive experience in drilling and engineering across global geographies, positioning us to become a leader in the clean energy sector. Please refer to this overview for our full portfolio of energy transition solutions.
Water Management
We are steadfast in our dedication to environmental stewardship, as reflected in our strategic approach to water management. In line with this commitment, we have broadened our focus to include adopting water conservation best practices, emphasizing wastewater recycling and reuse whenever viable. Most of this water was allocated for essential needs such as drinking, sanitation, and non-industrial hygiene purposes.. Our Health, Safety, and Environmental (HSE) team is strategically positioned worldwide to support global and regional water management compliance standards. As part of our commitment to responsible water management, any new operations or major changes are subject to standardized risk assessments. These assessments evaluate potential risks linked to discharges into water bodies. In 2023, Nabors used approximately 158 megaliters of water, representing a roughly 23% decrease compared to 2022.
Biodiversity
It is important to note that our customers primarily determine the selection and construction of wellsite locations. Therefore, we adhere to our customers’ biodiversity controls where applicable.
Waste Management
We are dedicated to a comprehensive waste management system that enhances operational efficiencies and aligns with our sustainability goals to reduce our environmental impact. Effectively managing waste is crucial for Nabors to reduce environmental impacts, enhance operational safety, and protect the well-being of our workforce and local communities. We prioritize initiatives to minimize waste, actively participate in recycling programs for recycled material, and implement strategies for handling residual waste.
Spill Prevention
Innovative technologies designed to properly contain fluids are foundational to our spill prevention approach. We feel a sense of urgency to protect the environment from impact, and we consider all facets, including the storage, handling, and disposal features.
Asset Decommissioning
Equipment management can also impact our environment, as most of our operations are executed with equipment. To mitigate the effects, we can take a forward-thinking approach to ensure the condition of the equipment is monitored and maintenance is prioritized to maximize its operational life and efficiency. We are devoted to decommissioning our assets when they have reached the end of their lifecycle in the most environmentally friendly way possible. In 2023, we recycled or reused 1,050 metric tons of metal.
