Care, Concern & Commitment

Exploring and producing the world’s energy resources with a minimal carbon footprint is always the goal at Nabors. The task becomes even more challenging when these resources are located in some of the world’s most environmentally sensitive areas. From the Alaskan tundra to the tropical rainforests of Papua New Guinea and Ecuador, Nabors has pioneered drilling solutions that contain every discharge, reduce emissions and minimize impact on the land. 

In Ecuador, there are an estimated 1,600 species of birds — more than double the number in all of North America. Most can be found in the Amazon Rainforest, including toucans, macaws and tanagers. Nabors has incorporated rig design elements and processes to minimize the impact on this precious natural resource. 

All efforts are captured in an Environmental Impact Matrix. At the top of the matrix is noise. Nabors hired a third-party company to measure noise inside the location where the rigs are operating, creating a ‘noise map’ that helps determine if the rig is in compliance with regulations, or if additional measures should be implemented, such as installing screens or enclosing equipment to reduce noise and stress on the bird denizens. The matrix also keeps track of Nabors’ monitoring of emissions, treated water discharge and hazardous waste disposal.

Rigs - Equador

In the United States, batch drilling uses an assembly-line approach to drill multiple wells on a single pad. With multi-well pad drilling, the environmental footprint of Nabors’ operations is reduced by drilling two to four wells on a single well pad. Air emissions are reduced by not transporting 30 to 40 truckloads each time a new well is drilled. Batch drilling also reduces manual-handling activities associated with switching out equipment. For example, instead of replacing the bottom-hole assembly (BHA) for the first string three times, the same BHA can be used for each subsequent well before changing equipment for the second string. Since the drilling mud is switched out once versus four times for each string, this reduces the risk of an unintended spill.

In Argentina, when equipment needs washing, Nabors now provides an ecological spill area, where pumps, skids, pans and other equipment from more than 18 rigs are washed in an effort to conserve water. A series of cleaning pools converge into an area that separates out fluids based on density. Employees isolate contaminated fluids and clean the remaining water for reuse.
